The Man with the Red Umbrella

Project Overview
In this game you relive the adventure of Giacomo Costantino Beltrami, an italian explorer, who traveled in North America and discovered the head of the Mississipi River. While on his journey, in the same way he did during 1823, you'll encounter natives and learn their culture and language, by interacting with them or with their typical objects.
My Contribution
For this thesis project I worked on the design. My main goal was to create a design that could unite fun and learning in the same experience. To do that the game has one core mechanics which is inspired by No Man's Sky. Basically the player will have to speak with natives who only speak their original language and in order to understand them the player will be pushed to explore the map finding totems with pages of the same dictionary Beltrami has drafted during his journey. By doing so the player will slowly know different words and his dialogues with the NPC will be more clear. Another contribution I made to the design was adding inside the game different props with which the player would be able to interact with. This props have the function to give player more knowledge about the natives culture, in a way similar to the Dark Souls serie and his way of showing the lore.
